Since 1971, Raphael House has been at the forefront of providing homeless and low-income families in the San Francisco Bay Area the personalized family-centered solutions they need to build brighter futures. A delicious dinner was followed by a heartwarming speech b a young former Raphael House resident that has recently been accepted into college. Board President, Kate Smith shared an announcement of the organization’s rebranding efforts including a new website and logo. Guests enjoyed dancing to the tunes of renowned Bay Area DJs, Stylus Entertainment and dessert after the commentary. “Raphael House has experienced a significant year as we continue to help our families move forward into long-term, self-sustaining futures,” said Chairwoman Kate Smith. “As we are a 100% privately funded organization, our annual gala is a crucial means for raising the vital funds for the programs and services we provide for our children and families to move past homelessness and poverty.” Raphael House‘s model of providing a stable homelike shelter and offering ongoing, comprehensive assistance with housing and job placement, while supporting the emotional and social needs of parents and children alike, helps to empower more than 300 families each year with the personalized family-centered solutions they need to build brighter futures. 06/02/2014   John Colins: Sushi Happy Hour
John Colins Announces Coffee by Day; Sushi by Night Happy Hour Hot-Spot Opens Sushi Bar (The Dojo); Special Xtra Coffee Mixed-Use Trend Enhances Popular SoMA Bar SAN FRANCISCO, CA (May 14, 2014) – As John Guiffre and Colin O’Malley, owners of SoMA’s happy hour hot-spot, John Colins prepare to celebrate nine years of business this July, the dynamic duo is bringing haute sushi and hot new coffee concept, Special Xtra, to their popular bar on Minna Street. In response to the popular Sushi nights offered on Thursday and Friday, John Colins is launching a permanent sushi bar in June with the addition of “The Dojo”. Chef Mark Hayashida’s petite sushi nook will be located on the mezzanine level, and will offer fresh and inventive sushi dishes available throughout the entire restaurant each evening, set to the backdrop of great tunes and good times. In addition, Special Xtra, a café serving Blue Bottle coffee and its signature “Macau Iced Coffee” by day is scheduled to open on June 3 and will be open each weekday from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. In addition, the space will carry Blue Bottle Coffee Retail beans to go, Goodie Goody cookies, brioches and scones. Seating 20 diners in the upstairs balcony, Mark Hayashuda’s “The Dojo” will offer a selection of fresh, made-to-order sushi, including House made sardines with avocado, beets, English peas, pickled red onion, shiso, and Meyer lemon crème fraiche; Kauai Ahi Poke with Koloa rum sea salt, furikake, hijiki seaweed, sesame teri dressing, and shaved green onions; Seasonal nigiri with daily seasonal sushi such as Umi Masu (ocean trout), Kona Kampachi (Hawaiian amberjack), Escolar, Surume Ika, Uni, Saba, Hamachi, Toro, and Iwashi (Japanese sardines). In addition, selections such as Kakuni Donburi (seasonal fish, red spring onions, ginger, konbu pickle, sous vide quail egg served over sushi rice) and Seasonal Makimono (showcasing traditional maki with creative daily selections) will be available. Hayashida’s culinary prowess has included creating Classic French-inspired cuisine at the Ritz-Carlton Los Angeles, Blowfish San Jose, and Google. He also served on the opening team of Skool in Potrero Hill and launched HayaHon with Johnny Honda, whom he met at Google. HayaHon was in residence at Cafe Royale in the Tendernob and at the 1582 SPACE on Folsom. He also serves as a consulting chef at Southside Spirithouse, the sister restaurant to John Colins. Owners of the aptly named John Colins, John Guiffre and Colin O’Malley originally met as young bartenders at Trap Door in the Marina (now Reed & Greenough), where John had hired Colin for the position. Colin returned the favor the following year, during Colin for a position behind the bar at popular hot spot, Wish on 11th Street. After years of planning and dreaming, in 2005, John and Colin set to work on building out the space at 90 Natoma, which used to be a stable for the fire department in the early 1900’s. In 2010, John Colins was displaced by the Trans Joint Power Authority (TJPA) under the city and state “Eminent Domain” and moved to its current location at 138 Minna. Straddling two rents, John and Colin built out the new space in the historic Rialta building with their own hands, creating an invitingly bright and airy atmosphere with comfortable lounge seating beneath large skylights and an all wood bar seating 12 guests enveloped by 20-foot exposed brick walls. Original wood floors and stunning natural light evoke the romance and decadence of a forgotten decade. The inviting atmosphere is paired with a truly original elixir menu that creates a vibrant happy hour each day of the workweek. A highly trained staff is capable of creating an original libation for any guest. Moscow Mules and Dark & Stormys are a happy hour mainstay as well as the ever-famous John Colins’ namesake - a Bourbon Sour made with fresh orange, lemon and honey. 06/30/2012   SAN FRANCISCO MAGAZINE: Rewinery Named Best of the Bay!

06/29/2012   SF LUXE: Green Couch in SF Decorator's Showcase
As customary during the time the home was built, the kitchen was located on the lower floor along with the servants’ dining room, laundry, houseman’s quarters and two wine cellars. Food was sent to the ground floor’s butler’s pantry located next to the formal dining room via a dumb waiter. Most homes of this vintage have had their kitchens moved to the ground floor since. However, each owner of the Heller mansion has retained the original set-up, with the kitchen downstairs, while changing the servants’ rooms into living spaces since all rooms open to a wonderful private terrace with bay views. Tray and Jeff Schlarb of Green Couch transformed the kitchen into a relaxing living and entertaining space with the cooking area wide open to a family room complete with fireplace.

06/28/2012   7x7 Magazine: Rewinery Bicyclists Get Wine To Your Door In Under An Hour
If you live or work in San Francisco, this wine bicycle delivery man from Rewinery can be at your door or your office in under an hour. I'm not kidding. There are two bottles of wine in that white box he's holding. Rewinery, a young SoMa-based wine business, aims to make the wine buying process easier than it's ever been. Via an interactive website or iPhone app, they offer a daily package of two bottles of wine for $30, allegedly always priced below what you'd pay at a grocery store. Take today's offer: two bottles of 2007 Domaine St. Nicolas Pinot Noir. Past deals have included 2005 Havens Merlot, and other varietals from Sans Permis and Murphy Vineyards. These are not wines for snobs or connoisseurs. (From the founders: "In our world, 'oak' is a tree, a 'nose' belongs on a face, and 'finish' is exactly what we do with a good bottle of wine"). They'll do just fine for a casual drinker, and are even better if you hate deciding between a ton of options, because only one wine is offered per day. Not even six months old, the company is still toying around with ideas. If you click the "Special Offer" tab on their website, you may be directed to a deal on two bottles of wine in a package with products from local chocolate maker TCHO, or Cowgirl Creamery cheeses. All of those are available in under an hour too. You pay with cash or credit card upon delivery, which can happen anywhere in San Francisco between the hours of 10 a.m. and 11 p.m. Convenient? Yes, I'd say so. Rewinery also acknowledges you're taking a gamble on the wine they're offering, so they'll happily refund and replace any wine if it's not to your liking. Today, the special offer is a Wine Happy Hour, pushing free delivery on a $5 bottle of 2005 Murphy Vineyards Red Wine if you place your order before 3 pm. Last week they did this and sold through 50 offers in five minutes. Seems almost silly not to try it out once—at the very least, it's a cheap thrill.

06/25/2012   SERIOUS EATS: New Beer: Gordon Biersch Imperial Pilsner Brau
I thought the era of making every beer Imperial was over, but this new big-bottle beer from Gordon Biersch shows that it's still worth doing. The IPB, as they're calling it, is made with Hallertau, Tettnang, Spalt and Saaz hops, and clocks in at 6.5% ABV. It's rich, bold, bitter stuff, with a hefty, almost chewy malt backbone. (Think graham crackers and wheat biscuits, plus plenty of bitter hops.) Though it lacks the lightness and crispness of a pilsner, it works for those times when you can't decide between cracking open a pilsner or an IPA, and you're yearning for malt. This beer would be right at home with salty meats—try grilled bratwurst or pastrami sandwiches. It would be a nice counterpoint to pulled pork or smoky ribs (don't forget the baked beans cooked with burnt ends.)

06/23/2012   THRILLIST: Try The New Full-On Food Menu At: Press Club
Surprise!: Press Club just ratcheted their menu from "snacks" to "full-on, beer-paired, oh-my-god-this-is-delicious-and-beer-paired food", including, yes, 24hr short ribs cooked sous vide to the perfect temperature and served with twice-baked potatoes loaded with creme fraiche and trim from the short rib, like some kind of beefy potato Gusher. Oh and there's a lot more deliciousness where this came from Read more: http://www.thrillist.com/san-francisco/2012/05/23/the-playbook#ixzz1zLWSHWz1

06/21/2012   SF WEEKLY: Rewinery.com: New Start-Up Promises Wine Delivery in an Hour in S.F.
Ah, San Francisco. We get to be the beta testers and beneficiaries of the world's best web and mobile startups before they seek to conquer the rest of the world. When Paulo Lerner moved from Brazil to SF last year to pursue his startup dream, he wanted to build a peer-to-peer-interactive-collabrative-wine-reccomendation-engine. Now he wants to deliver 2 bottles of wine to you in the next hour for $30 to have with dinner*. The new service is only available, for now, here in SF. "For the casual wine drinker, wine is not something to keep, it's for immediate consumption," Paulo says. "That's not well suited for e-commerce." So he built a system for immediate consumption: rewinery.com. He sources the wines, posts and e-mails the offering, and has orders delivered to your door by messenger service from his warehouse (it's really a storage locker) in SF. You pick when you want it delivered, and it's wine in time for tonight. Paulo's instinct is certainly supported by the data I've heard. We in the wine-writing and related communities are always quoting (admittedly without proper accreditation) that over 75%, or 90%, or whatever other massive number we've been exposed to lately, of wine purchases are consumed the day they are bought. This week's offering (which we got you a deal on) is a "90 points by Parker" Haven's Merlot which Parker described as opulent, fleshy, hedonistic." Sounds like my kinda wine, though I haven't tasted it. Two bottles, delivered in a hour you choose for $30 all in. For for a wine that originally retailed for $40 for a single bottle, that's a risk worth taking on a startup. * We convinced him to get it down to $20 for SFoodie readers on their first order. Just type the coupon code "sfweekly: in at checkout for $10 dollars off your first order.

06/20/2012   SFist: Rewinery: (Good) Wine Delivered to your Door within the Hour
Have you heard of Rewinery? It's a wine delivery service for San Francisco that delivers boutique wines to your house or apartment within an hour by bicycle. It's actually a pretty cool concept and affordable. We scored two bottles of 2008 La Czar Sauvignon Blanc for $30 the other night (Full disclosure: We were given a special code by their publicist, so it was free of charge for us. Alas, the perks of boozy media ilk.) The wines change daily (today, for example, you can get two bottles of 2005 Havens Merlot) and you can either download their app, use email, or get lit via Facebook. While we're not in the habit of promoting any and all freebies here at SFist, we do think this is a rather nifty concept -- especially for those of you who live high on a hill in say, Glen Park or Twin Peaks and cannot easily saunter to your nearest corner store to buy a bottle or two of good wine. And here's an image we snapped of the friendly Rewinery fella who delivered the wine to our doorstep in a not-so-nice part of SoMa. Thanks, guy!

06/05/2012   TABLEHOPPER: More Changes at Press Club: Mauro Cirilli Is the New Wine Director
Some exciting news at ~PRESS CLUB~: Mauro Cirilli, previously the wine director of Perbacco and Barbacco, is the new wine director for Press Club. He will completely revamp the wine program, keeping the focus on California wines, but integrating a good percentage of European wines as well, from France, Italy, Spain, Austria, and Germany. It won’t be a huge list, around 100 labels, but definitely fun and interesting, with 25-plus wines by the glass and plenty of flights, mostly focused on comparing New World with Old World. With the new menu by chef Chris Borges of Taste Catering and now this, let’s just say I’m looking forward to revisiting Press Club soon.
